Ode to Club Crackers by Taylor Hayes

I get off the school bus and

immediately run into the house where I’m met

with a smiling face

and a plate of club crackers.

Stacked one next to another,

peanut butter smeared on the top

I laugh and quickly sit down.

My great-gram sits across from me,

her eyes shining with love as she asks

me about my day.

Moments later she has a deck of cards

and places them in between us.

I eat another club cracker,

the taste of peanut butter still lingers on my tongue

as we start playing W.A.R.

We tie the game and she chuckles

before reaching over and stealing a cracker

from my plate.
