A War with Age by Julia Elliott

Summer was time off
Lunch was combined with Recess
Homework was fun
Grades did not matter

Summer was now for jobs
Lunch was just to eat
Homework was dreaded
Grades were everything

Being different was considered weird
Being a nerd was not cool at all
Girls liking girls was kept secret
Boys liking boys was feared

Different is unique
Being smart is sweet
Being lesbian is more accepted
Being gay was okay

Dating was not serious
Everyone loved each other
Everyone was happy
It was all fun

Relationships are supposed to be meaningful
Love was not in the air
No one was happy
It was not fun anymore

Growing up is supposed to be rewarding
Yet it feels like a challenge
A battle meant to fail
A war that should have not started
