Caribbean Grass Sea Sponge by Julie Binder

The Caribbean Grass Sea Sponge has a durability like a well worn jacket, and is always consistently present. It can live up to 5,000 years old. It seems like everytime you open the coat closet it is there staring back at you. It is very durable, long lasting, and tough. It takes everything in and gives filtration and gives nothing in return besides positive attributes for the ocean. Much like a sensitive person, a sweet old grandmother who sits in the corner of the room and has heard tens of thousands of stories in her lifetime. Usually overlooked but is a very important person of the family. They both do their jobs simply and quietly, hoping for nothing in return. She absorbs every little comment both positive and negative, she responds with kindness and uplifts others. The Sea Sponge plays a major role in keeping marine ecosystems healthy. Similarly, the grandmother is the glue of the family, she keeps everyone updated on each other and never lacks detail. The sponge can filter out 20,000 times their own volume in water. This woman gives endless love and advice to anyone and everyone in need. Giving words of wisdom and love. Behind both the sponge and grandmother’s soft and cultivating appearance, they are heartless. The sponge can fight off predators by chemical compounds, never having to fend for themselves physically. Just like grandmother would do anything to protect her family by being resilient. And tends to push away people that bring her or her family down and prove people wrong. The sea sponge is highly affected by pollution, and filters out bad particles in water. They tend to remain in one place their entire lives and this woman does not like change. She has lived in the same house for over thirty years. The Caribbean Grass Sea sponge operates without a brain, eyes, mouth or central nervous system. Yet, it still continues to live and thrive. Even after health scares, the grandmother is still resistant and strong. Her muscle memory is like a spinning record from the 80’s. Always knowing what she is doing without any help or assistance. The sponge also is oddly shaped and can come in a variety of different shapes, colors, and sizes. Most commonly in the color of different shades of yellow, green, and slightly grayish. Both provide support and endurance to the environments around them.
